Justin Webb - Bell Vice President of Olympic Services

The road to the Olympics is a long one and Justin Webb’s road to becoming Vice President of Olympic Services at Bell was also long and includes some very interesting stops along the way. Justin worked to convince Bell to bid on becoming the Premier National Partner and the exclusive Telecommunications Partner to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. He succeeded, Bell succeeded, and now his team of over 700 people has succeeded in building a brand new IP network with fibre optic cable. Bell’s Olympic network will connect all 130 venues in Vancouver and Whistler.

An Olympic Vision of the Future

Some years ago, I was involved in designing the telecommunications for a major sporting event—so I know a lot about the problems facing Bell with the 2010 Winter Olympics. Technology has come a long way since my project took place and I was interested to find out how the new services were having an impact on the biggest event around. IP technology has finally surfaced in a big way with a fully converged network for the first time in Olympic history. We look at what that will mean for network design in the future and why the world is watching more than just the games.
